Christmas Thoughts in Summer – Guyana Black Cake

Christmas thoughts in Summer – (Harvest- sort of)

DSCF0765

For a really good treat
Think ahead
And this year
Delighted
I make my own
Fruits of my labour
Not quite
But my neighbours
Freely given
Carry them back
Memories in the juice
And form
Sliced
Sugar boiled
Spiced
And spread out to dry
– oven temperature
Not sun
Like dates
Those remembered
Those eaten
Carried back again
Fruits of my labour
Not quite
But those in logistics
And markets
And elsewhere quite hot
Mix them
In juice from the vine
Juice from the cane
And let settle
Ruminate
Rejuvenate
Remember
Memories and delights
Cake from my labour
For summer in winter.
